Periodontal Health and Diseases

Herald square dental Periodontal department Proposal 1 Paola Fonseca,RDH Periodontal Health and Diseases: Gingivitis can be defined as the inflammation of the gums due to the bacteria around the gingival margin. The gums become red and inflamed. The mouth is colonized by many bacteria forming a sticky white coating on the teeth called plaque. When the plaque is not removed it hardens forming “tartar” that brushing does not clean. Only a professional cleaning by your dentist or hygienist can remove tartar. Implants can also get gingivitis or periodontal disease just like regular teeth. When tartar or calculus forms underneath the gum line, it pushes into the gum creating what is called periodontal pockets destroying the periodontal fibers that attach to the tooth, ultimately if left untreated an infection called Periodontitis occurs. The body’s response to infection attacks the bone and connective tissue that hold the teeth in place; as a result teeth need to be removed. There are specific risk factors that can influence the incidence of periodontal diseases; among them are diabetes, hormonal changes, suppressed immunity, medications and genetics. Recently periodontal disease has been linked to heart disease and low birth weight in babies. The earlier periodontal diseases are diagnosed the better the prognosis, this is why we recommend that you see a dentist or a hygienist periodically to maintain your gums and implants healthy. Scaling and root planning is a method used to remove the plaque that forms above and under the gum line. Special instruments are used to remove spots where bacteria gather contributing to periodontal disease. In addition, antibiotic is injected into the pockets that get released over time increasing the success of the treatment. After completion of the therapy patients get periodontal maintenance every three months to maintain the soft tissue health. Oral prophylaxis or “teeth cleaning “is the removal of plaque, calculus and stain above and below the gum line including exposed and unexposed dental surfaces performed by a dental hygienist to prevent and control bacteria that causes periodontal disease. During these procedures the hygienist provides topical anesthetics (pain management) that are applied to the gum and exposed hypersensitive areas. Dentures also require prophylaxis to remove bacterial deposits that can irritate the soft tissue and affect your breath. (Dental lab)
