Dental Implants FAQ New York City

dental implants replace the root system of natural teeth

What are dental implants?

A dental implant is a titanium cylindrical post that serves as a substitute for the root of the natural tooth that’s been lost. During a minor, in-office surgical procedure, the implant post is placed in your jaw bone. A connector, know as an abutment, is added onto that dental implant. Finally, a crown, a completely lifelike replacement tooth, is custom made to match your natural teeth either that day or after the healing period, which completes a single tooth dental implant.

Why should your replace missing teeth with dental implants?

dental implants can help restore your smile
By middle age, most adults are missing at least one tooth whether lost through injury or decay or gum disease. Each and every tooth plays an essential role in the structure of the mouth and in its relationship to the other teeth. The choice to leave the space where there was once a tooth invariably leads to further complications:

Speech

The ability to say certain words is hampered in various ways depending on the location of the missing tooth or teeth.

Irregular Bite

Shift in pressure onto some of the remaining teeth which then causes movement of those teeth into the open space. This creates additional orthodontic problems and often causes jaw pain and headaches.
dental implants can support a replacement tooth crown Replacing your missing tooth, holds the place, and prevents bone loss.

Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease)

The plaque accumulates easily in the hard to reach areas created after and during the shifting of the remaining teeth. This leads to gingivitis and worsening gum infections that can eventually contribute to the loss of more teeth.

Bone Loss

Each tooth is a “place-holder”, in the jaw. Bone loss to the jaw is one of the most serious consequences of missing teeth. When a tooth is lost and not replaced, the bone surrounding it begins to deteriorate.

keep your mouth healthyBrush, Floss and have regular dental checkups as you would with natural teeth. Even though, implant teeth can never decay, the gum tissue around them can become inflamed or infected without proper care and good oral hygiene. If your dental implants are cared for properly with regular care, checkups and cleaning there is a greater chance that they will last a lifetime. For a healthy individual with good oral hygiene and good health, dental implants are predictably successful with reported success rates above 90-95 percent.
