What are dental implants?
A dental implant is a titanium cylindrical post that serves as a substitute for the root of the natural tooth that’s been lost. During a minor, in-office surgical procedure, the implant post is placed in your jaw bone. A connector, know as an abutment, is added onto that dental implant. Finally, a crown, a completely lifelike replacement tooth, is custom made to match your natural teeth either that day or after the healing period, which completes a single tooth dental implant.
Why should your replace missing teeth with dental implants?
By middle age, most adults are missing at least one tooth whether lost through injury or decay or gum disease. Each and every tooth plays an essential role in the structure of the mouth and in its relationship to the other teeth. The choice to leave the space where there was once a tooth invariably leads to further complications:
The ability to say certain words is hampered in various ways depending on the location of the missing tooth or teeth.
Shift in pressure onto some of the remaining teeth which then causes movement of those teeth into the open space. This creates additional orthodontic problems and often causes jaw pain and headaches.
Replacing your missing tooth, holds the place, and prevents bone loss.
Periodontal Disease (Gum Disease)
The plaque accumulates easily in the hard to reach areas created after and during the shifting of the remaining teeth. This leads to gingivitis and worsening gum infections that can eventually contribute to the loss of more teeth.
Each tooth is a “place-holder”, in the jaw. Bone loss to the jaw is one of the most serious consequences of missing teeth. When a tooth is lost and not replaced, the bone surrounding it begins to deteriorate.

Is the dental implant procedure or placement painful?
Surprisingly, it is not. Any post operative discomfort you may have can usually be managed with over the counter anti-inflammatory medications such as ibuprofen.
Are dental implants expensive?
Initially, dental implants are more expensive than other tooth replacement options such as dentures. The cost of replacing a single tooth with a dental implant is almost the same as replacing it with a regular fixed bridge. Dental implant treatment may qualify for some insurance coverage, but situations vary. The cost will vary by patient needs, bone quantity, and region. But, the implants can last many years longer than other tooth replacement options. In fact, it is quite likely that they will never need replacement therefore, they offer the best value as a long term investment in your appearance, overall health, wellbeing and comfort. How do I care for dental implants?
Brush, Floss and have regular dental checkups as you would with natural teeth. Even though, implant teeth can never decay, the gum tissue around them can become inflamed or infected without proper care and good oral hygiene. If your dental implants are cared for properly with regular care, checkups and cleaning there is a greater chance that they will last a lifetime. For a healthy individual with good oral hygiene and good health, dental implants are predictably successful with reported success rates above 90-95 percent.
What is All-on-4?
All-on-4® is a trademarked treatment procedure that essentially involves replacement of all missing teeth in one jaw by using only 4 implants. This procedure is beneficial sometimes for patients who have lost a lot of bone in the back areas of the mouth. This is not recommended for all implant candidates. There is no such thing as “one size fits all” dentistry. A proper assessment with either Dr. Alfred Shirzadnia or Dr. Arthur Yam, true dental implant experts in Manhattan, will help you evaluate your dental needs and your treatment options. They are dedicated, experienced and highly skilled as they place thousands of implants and are among the best implant dentists in New York City.
